Things to consider before buying Laptop For College Under $400
Processor
It is important that you have a good processor. So its best not to go below i5 intel chips series. Otherwise, the laptop may not run smoothly and fast.
RAM (Memory)
A minimum of 4 GB is recommended but 8 GB are better because RAM makes your laptop work smoothly and faster by giving more space for multitasking.
Disk Space/Hard Drive
You want at least 250GB HDD or 500GB SSD preferably solid state drive so it runs smoother and faster than regular hard drives!
Memory Cards
While most of the Windows based laptops come with inbuilt memory, If yours doesn’t then one to look out for are SD card readers. It allows you to transfer data easily from your camera directly into a laptop instead of a computer for easier use and information management.
Screen Size
If you are buying for college, go with at least 11 inch screen size if not it will be difficult to view the contents on a small screen. The reason why I prefer bigger screen is because when you do presentations in class, it will be really easy to present using large screens so that everyone can see better rather than squinting at small ones! However, if money is tight then its perfectly okey having a 10 or 12 inch one but try getting as big as you can!
Optical Drive
This most probably won’t come standard in laptops itself these days but some external options such as USB or DVD drive can be used but you need to make sure that the laptop has at least one of them so that in case the system get messed up you still have a way of getting your files off. These days people rely more on cloud storage rather than hard drives so its not much of an issue having an optical drive since most laptops come with 2 USB ports which are enough for most people who use pen drives these days!
Battery Life
With college work, keeping and eye on power is important. Get 6 hour battery life if possible. If not then a minimum of 5 hours is acceptable. Getting 8 hours+ batter power is worth it as well.
Ports/Slots
Important to look out for USB 3 slots (blue) and HDMI port and SD card slot as well. Some laptops come with USB Type-C which is 2 in 1 so if you have any accessories that are designed for type-c then you might need to look out for them.
Sleeker Laptops
These days getting sleeker, thinner and lighter ones are a plus point since they don’t take up much space while carrying around!
